Position Overview:

Avery Hall is seeking a Senior Design Manager to join our growing team. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Development , Director of Construction , and senior leadership, this individual will be involved in all facets of day-to-day design, coordination and construction administration activities across multiple mixed-use and multifamily projects.

This role is highly collaborative and hands-on, engaging with in-house development & construction teams, consultants, contractors, and ownership throughout all phases of development. The position offers a unique opportunity to participate in every stage of the development lifecycle—from concept through design coordination and construction execution —within a high-energy, fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

This position is based in Brooklyn, New York, and requires regular on-site presence at active construction sites as well as in-office presence at Avery Hall’s corporate headquarters in Gowanus, Brooklyn.

Key Responsibilities:

Design Leadership & Project Oversight

  • Lead the architectural and interior design process across multiple mixed-use, multifamily, and condominium projects from concept design through construction administration.
  • Maintain the overall design vision, ensuring alignment with Avery Hall’s standards for design excellence, market positioning, functionality, and long-term asset value.
  • Direct the preparation and review of concept design, schematic design, design development, and consultant packages to ensure clarity, quality, and execution readiness.
  • Prepare and oversee high-quality presentations, renderings, finish boards, and visual storytelling materials for internal leadership, capital partners, and external stakeholders.
  • Manage the design of exterior architecture, façade expression, lobby design, residential interiors, amenity spaces, and public realm improvements.

Consultant Coordination & Technical Management

  • Coordinate with architects, interior designers, landscape architects, lighting designers, and specialty consultants throughout all design phases.
  • Manage interdisciplinary coordination across structural, MEP, façade, vertical transportation, and specialty trades to proactively resolve conflicts and maintain schedule milestones.
  • Support project entitlement efforts through preparation of massing studies, zoning analyses, presentations, and visualizations for agency, ULURP, and community engagement processes.

Materials, Cost, and Value Engineering

  • Review the selection and specification of architectural materials, interior finishes, FF&E, lighting, and specialty elements across all project typologies.
  • Source vendors and coordinate material pricing exercises to balance design intent, durability, and budget parameters.
  • Collaborate with development and construction teams to evaluate subcontractor bids, scope leveling, alternates, and procurement packages for design alignment.
  • Develop proactive value engineering solutions that preserve design quality while improving constructability, procurement efficiency, and budget performance.

Construction Administration & Field Execution

  • Oversee design intent through construction by review of RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, mock-ups, field sketches, and finish samples.
  • Conduct regular site walks to verify design execution, field quality, finish consistency, and resolution of in-field design conditions.
  • Collaborate with construction and development leadership to resolve field conflicts, sequencing issues, and material substitutions while protecting the overall design vision.
  • Support punch list, model unit execution, staging design, amenity completion, and final turnover to ensure a polished end-user experience.

Acquisitions & Strategic Design Analysis

  • Lead architectural and interior design analysis for new acquisitions, including massing studies, unit mix test fits, façade concepts and amenity strategies.
  • Provide early-stage design feasibility studies, competitive market analysis, and conceptual strategies for potential investments.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, or design-related field preferred).
  • Master’s degree in Architecture, Construction Management, Real Estate Development, or Engineering is strongly preferred.

Professional Experience

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in architecture, real estate development, construction, or related design/development fields.
  • Extensive knowledge of building systems, construction materials & detailing, means and methods for multifamily and mixed-use development.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage design development, coordinate consultants, and resolve technical issues.
  • Experience with the NYC entitlement, zoning, approvals, and permitting processes.

Skills & Attributes

  • Proven leadership with a collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Exceptional organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while fostering teamwork across large consultant and construction teams.
  • Construction administration, detailing and shop drawing review/coordination.
  • High proficiency in Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Suite & 3D Modeling Software.

Salary:

Salary will be determined on an individualized basis taking into account a wide range of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, education, and, where applicable, licenses or certifications held.
