Job Description

LIFEGUARD

The Astoria Aquatic Center is currently seeking lifeguards for the summer season with opportunities to continue working in the Fall and winter! We are looking for individuals who can commit to a regular schedule, working at least three days per week.

No prior experience is necessary and all training will be provided onsite. We are looking for individuals who can commit to a regular schedule, working at least three days per week. 

Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons at the Astoria Aquatic Center by promoting water safety, monitoring patrons, enforcing safety rules, preventing and responding to emergencies, providing first aid, and maintaining the cleanliness of the facility.

SCHEDULE

Lifeguards work part-time and are scheduled based on their availability and the staffing needs of the facility, including regular operating hours as well as special events. We are looking for lifeguards available to work at least three days per week, with preference given to those who can commit to a minimum of 20 hours weekly and are available afternoons and weekends. Most desirable candidates will be available for 25 hours per week. Part-time positions with the City are limited to working no more than 129 hours per month.

Shift Schedule

Tuesdays - Fridays

Afternoons: 11:00AM - 4:00PM

Evenings: 2:30PM - 7:00PM

Availability to cover 6:00-11:00AM shifts on occasion is preferred.

Saturdays

Mornings: 7:30AM - 12:00PM

Afternoons: 11:45AM - 5:00PM

HIRING PROCESS

Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. Selected candidates will be invited to participate in an interview and swim test, with additional details provided in the interview invitation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Monitors patrons in and around the water with constant vigilance to identify potential hazards, accidents or unsafe behavior through proactive scanning patterns.
  • Performs water rescues when necessary, using appropriate techniques to ensure the safety of both the swimmer and the lifeguard.
  • Provides first aid and emergency care as needed until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Educates patrons on the facility's safety rules and enforces rules when unsafe actions are observed.
  • Proactively and frequently performs facility cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping and sanitizing floors, wiping down and sanitizing surfaces, taking out the garbage, picking up debris, cleaning restrooms and locker rooms, laundering hand towels and other cleaning tasks.
  • Completes in-service trainings as required by certifying agency and Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Presents a professional attitude at all times and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  • Demonstrates understanding of and adheres to all safety regulations and practices.
  • Displays excellent communication skills required in working with coworkers and patrons including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.
  • Maintains predictable attendance by providing availability information in advance and adheres to published schedule for shift times and dates.
  • Maintains a neat and professional appearance and follows dress code protocol where assigned.
  • Works collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
  • Respectfully takes direction from lead staff and supervisors.
  • Follows all safety rules and procedures established for various work areas.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and guidelines as described in the City of Astoria Personnel Manual and other documentation related to this position.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must be 16 years or older.
  2. Must be available to work at least three days per week.
  3. Possession of or ability to pass an Ellis and Associates International Lifeguard Training Certification, including CPR & First Aid certification.
  4. Ability to physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
  5. Ability to pass a City background check including checks of Criminal, Social Security Trace and Sex Offender Registry records.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience lifeguarding or working in water-safety settings.
  2. Experience working with children and young adults.
  3. Competitive swimming experience.
  4. Current or expired Lifeguard Certification from nationally recognized agency (Ellis & Assoc., Red Cross).

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees must be able to physically perform all duties of the lifeguard role which includes standing, sitting, walking, lifting, reaching, bending, climbing, balancing, kneeling and crouching. Occasionally lifting and moving up to 50 pounds is required and includes the ability to assist conscious and unconscious patrons in distress out of the water and on the deck including use of a backboard. Employees must remain alert and vigilant with the ability to see and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility requiring close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus to keep an effective scan pattern and keep a visual of the entire bottom of the pool and assigned zone. Employees are required to communicate verbally, follow instructions and protocols and hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility or in the facility.

While performing the duties of this position, employees are regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and fumes or airborne particles (Chlorine). The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
